Beyond the Brow

Why natural permanent makeup is having a moment

Notes on natural permanent makeup, from May's studio in Hamilton

Issue One · November 2026

There was a time when beauty was often about looking younger, following trends and keeping up with whatever look was considered "in." Today, many women are approaching beauty differently.

They want to look polished — but still like themselves. They want simplicity, confidence and results that feel effortless rather than obvious. That shift is changing the way women think about permanent makeup.

Enhance you — never overtake you

It sounds simple, but creating a natural result requires a surprising amount of artistry. Every face has its own proportions. Every brow grows differently. Skin changes with age, and so do personal preferences. Someone who wears very little makeup may want an entirely different result from someone who has always loved a more defined brow.

"Permanent makeup should enhance you, not become the first thing people notice about you."

That is why every appointment at my studio begins with a conversation. Before creating a design, I consider your facial structure, your natural brow pattern, your skin, your lifestyle and your expectations. The goal isn't to reproduce a trend. It is to create something that belongs to your particular face.

Thinking about nano brows?

Nano brows are fine, hair-like strokes created with a machine and a single fine needle, designed to blend seamlessly with your own brow hair — so no one can tell where your brows end and the work begins. Done properly, they heal soft and believable, and last one to three-plus years with proper care.

For women whose brows have become finer and less defined with age — or where years of over-plucking have left gaps — that can mean waking up already feeling like yourself, with a little less time spent in front of the mirror. My clients range from first-time guests to women well into their eighties. The desire to feel confident and cared for doesn't have an expiration date.

A note from one artist to another

Natural results aren't an accident of a light hand — they are a system. Mine is built on one needle configuration that adapts across skin types and ages, instead of a different tool for every face. Skin first, trend last, and the restraint to stop one pass earlier than feels finished. I'll be sharing more of the thinking behind the work in future issues, as my training studio takes shape.

It simply looks like you

The goal isn't necessarily to look younger. It is to look like yourself — a little more defined, a little more polished. Because when beauty is truly personalized, it doesn't look like a trend. It simply looks like you.
